Throughout the development of DHM instruments, our flagship field instrument has been named the ‘orangeBox’, because…well its an orange box…
The orangeBox has been successfully been deployed to various extreme environments around the world.
In March of 2015, a field deployment to Nuuk, Greenland investigated microbial populations in sea ice brine.
In May of 2017, a field deployment to Barrow, AK investigated microbial populations in sea ice brine, as well as cryopeg brine.
In June of 2017, a field deployment to Axel Heiberg Island, Canada (~North Pole) attempted to investigate microbial populations of frozen glaciers, but a laser malfunction prevented its use in the field. Samples were brought back to the lab for analysis however.
In September of 2017, a field deployment to the Cedars, CA investigated microbial populations in ultrabasic springs (pH>11).
In September of 2018, a field deployment to a salt mine in Ireland, investigated microbial populations inside salt formations 2 km below the surface of the Earth.
In October of 2018, a return deployment to the Cedars, further investigated the prevalence of microbial activity in ultrabasic environments (pH>11).
